One of the joys of staying on Xagħra Square is how little time you spend getting anywhere. Gozo is small, and from our front door some of the island’s best-known places are a short walk or drive away.
About an 8-minute walkĠgantija Temples
On the edge of the village stand the Ġgantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built from around 3600 BC — older than Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. Walk out through the village lanes, spend an hour among the great limestone blocks, and you can be back on the square for coffee before lunch. We have written a fuller guide to Ġgantija.
About a 10-minute driveRamla l-Ħamra
Gozo’s best-known beach is a sweep of red-orange sand on the north coast, backed by dunes and open countryside. From the clifftop lookout above the bay, beside Calypso’s Cave, you can see the whole beach and the valley behind it. The cave itself is closed for safety, but the view is the reason to stop. More ideas in our guide to beaches near Xagħra.
About a 10-minute driveVictoria and the Citadel
The island’s capital, Victoria (Rabat to Gozitans), is crowned by the Citadel: a fortified hilltop town with its cathedral, stone lanes and ramparts that look out over almost all of Gozo. Below it, the streets around the main square are good for a wander, a pastizz and a slow coffee.
Back on the square
Evenings are for the roof terrace, with the basilica lit up across the square. If you would like more ideas for your stay, we are always happy to share our favourite places — just ask when you book.
Times are approximate and depend on traffic, parking and how often you stop to look at the view.
